Martin Whitmarsh (GBR) McLaren Chief Executive Officer. Formula One World Championship, Rd 4, Chinese Grand Prix, Practice Day, Shanghai, China, Friday 16 April 2010.
    Name Martin Whitmarsh
Place of Birth Lyndhurst, New
  Forest, England
Date of Birth 29 April 1958
Joined Mclaren 1999
Martin Whitmarsh joined McLaren in 1989 and took over as team principal in 2009. The 52-year-old Englishman graduated from Portsmouth polytechnic in 1980 with a degree in mechanical engineering, and immediately joined British Aerospace as a structural analysis engineer.Nine years later, he joined McLaren as head of operations and since then has been instrumental in assisting McLaren’s growth and diversification as a company as well as overseeing the race team’s engineering and manufacturing functions .He was promoted to managing director in 1997 to allow McLaren's then team boss Ron Dennis to spend more time on the TAG McLaren Group. In 2005 Whitmarsh was appointed chief operating officer of McLaren Racing, a subsidiary company of the McLaren Group. Then, following Dennis's decision to step back from race operations ahead of the 2009 season, Whitmarsh took over as team principal. Having started the 2009 season with a relatively uncompetitive car, the McLaren team under Whitmarsh improved impressively to take two grand prix victories and secure third place in the Constructors' World Championship; indeed, McLaren scored the most points of any team in the second half of the 2009 season. Whitmarsh was voted chairman of the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) in 2010.
